I am currently designing a variety of wooden polyhedral models of the earth. The first one is the icosahedron (a 20 sides polyhedron) with the Dymaxion map projection. Although it sounds complicated it is a simple and fun model to build (see image below). All the models will have a small stand with axle on which the “globe” will rotate.
